Being an intern with OneWorld U.S. offers you more than a wonderful experience. It offers skills, knowledge and connections that last a lifetime!

Specifically interns benefit from the following:

  • Opportunity to network with OneWorld nonprofit partner organizations
  • Publish in the Students Speak section of the OneWorld website
  • Learn about current human rights and sustainable development issues
  • Participate in conferences, workshops and more!

They also work closely with the OneWorld team members on projects and activities. Interns are a highly valued part of the OneWorld team.

Shane, Partnership Intern
"The partnership internship introduced me to many different non-profit organizations and the work they do while developing my communication skills and technical experience."

Ida, Editorial Intern
"The most exciting aspect of my Editorial Internship was the world of endless opportunities that opened up before me. I acquired fundamental editorial skills and published dozens of articles online. I met one-on-one with Zimbabwean delegates specializing in women's rights. I attended life-changing events featuring environmental experts. Most importantly, I learned that development is not about politics, it's about people."

Kira, Partnership Intern
"OneWorld gave me a great opportunity to enter the nonprofit community and opened doors for my future in the expansion of knowledge and experiences."

Ian, Partnership Intern
"An internship with OneWorld provided me both with the tools and contacts that I needed to get ahead in the non-profit world. The ability to see meaningful exchanges taking place both at the peer learning sessions, and the networking happy hours, has reinstilled my faith that non-profits are reliant on a community to survive. Participating in the events calendar and blog allowed me to realize how my work could impact and educate individuals in other member groups."

Megan, Partnership Intern
"OneWorld was my first introduction into the nonprofit world. They treated me like an integral part of their team and gave me valuable tasks to add to their overall mission. I would definitely recommend this internship to anyone who wants to work in a friendly environment, learn about many different nonprofits, and learn more about our global community."

Editorial Internship

The editorial intern(s) will work closely with OneWorld editorial staff on various editorial products produced by the team, including but not limited to:
  • the Global Daily Headlines section of the Web site and email newsletter;
  • special reports on key topics in (and out of) the news.

Intern(s) should be highly motivated—especially concerning global issues in the fields of sustainable development and human rights—with exceptional writing skills. A journalistic background can be helpful but is not required. Intern(s) must have the ability to stay focused while working independently and be able to work remotely (from home or other location) while staying in touch with OneWorld staff (many of whom also work remotely). Intern(s) must be able to meet deadlines both on a daily and longer-term basis.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • In coordination with the Managing Editor, intern(s) will select stories from OneWorld partner organizations’ Web sites and write summaries (or “blurbs”) for review and possible publication. Intern(s) will learn the criteria for story selection as well as the skills to publish a well-rounded and comprehensive daily summary of global issues.
  • Intern(s) may also have the opportunity (depending on level of interest and journalistic skills) to attend local events (press conferences, rallies, etc.) and write articles on the proceedings to be published on OneWorld’s Web site.

Duration
Flexible, with a minimum three month commitment

Hours per week
40 hours per week preferred, 20 hours per week minimum

Location & Logistics
Much of the work can be done remotely (at home or other location) with regular email and phone contact and some face-to-face meetings. The intern may also be asked to participate in weekly team meetings.

Compensation & Benefits
This is a great opportunity for interns to acquire editorial experience, possible publication, increased awareness of the NGO community and international issues, and the satisfaction of contributing to a global dialogue while raising issues often overlooked or distorted by mainstream media. The internship is unpaid. OneWorld will be happy to assist interns in obtaining academic credit.

For more information or to apply for the internship, email useditors[@]oneworld.net.
